If you love working with kids, enjoy creative activities, and want to be part of a vibrant, energetic team—then this is the opportunity for you!

As a Kidspace Page, you'll:

  • Assist customers and cheer on young readers in the Summer Reading program.
  • Keep our toys and materials in tip-top shape.
  • Prep cool crafts and hands-on activities.
  • Help make sure the KidSpace area stays clean, welcoming, and full of fun!

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Comfortable interacting with customers, especially children, and able to deliver outstanding service.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow directions.
  • Basic knowledge of computers, printing, email.
  • Ability to perform basic math tasks and handle small payments.

Temporary Position - 18 hours per week. Please indicate which schedule you are applying for on your Application:

  • Schedule A: Sunday 11am-5pm, Monday 8:30am-2:30pm, Tuesday 8:30am-2:30pm

Library Associate

Join the Information Services team at Gail Borden Library as a part-time (24 hours/week) Library Associate. In this role, you will deliver exceptional customer service and develop strong interpersonal skills. You will serve the public by providing information, promoting library materials and services, and assisting customers with technology.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works with a team to provide excellent customer service.
  • Responds to customer inquiries for information, books, and other materials.
  • Refers questions to a librarian as appropriate.
  • Promotes library services.
  • Assists customers with technology tasks such as wireless printing and installing apps.
  • Answers phone calls.
  • Serving as U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent*

*Candidates for this position must meet criteria required by the U.S. Department of State to become a U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent: 

  1. U.S. citizen or a U.S. non-citizen national;
  2. 18 years of age or older;
  3. Does not have a record of either: (i) A Federal or State felony conviction; or (ii) A misdemeanor conviction for crimes involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, including but not limited to embezzlement, identity theft, misappropriation, document fraud, drug offenses, or dishonesty in carrying out a responsibility involving public trust.

Other Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of technology including Microsoft Office, mobile devices, apps, and computers.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English fluency a plus.

24 hours per week including days, evenings, and weekends. Schedule may vary from week to week, but is generally 3 shifts per week.

Customer Relations Assistant 

Are you a positive and friendly individual who enjoys engaging with all types of people? Our Customer Relations Department may be the place for you! Our Main Library has a part-time opening for someone who has excellent communication and customer service skills.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A real “People Person,” enthusiastic, caring, friendly, and empathetic.
  • A team player who thinks quickly on their feet as decisions need to be made.
  • A self-starter with the initiative and courage to propose new ideas.

In this role you will:

  • Perform circulation services, including check-in/check-out of materials and placing holds on materials.
  • Perform library card registration and program registration.
  • Provide information to customers by answering questions and being proactive with offering assistance in a friendly and professional manner.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

25 hours per week – combination of days, nights, and weekend hours.

Maintenance Technician I

Gail Borden Public Library has an immediate opening for a full-time Maintenance Technician. This position will assist with overall maintenance, as well as custodial and building support for all library locations. Up to 50% of the job responsibilities are custodial, with the remaining being focused on maintenance and support.

 

The essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responds in a timely manner to work tickets and calls from library staff for assistance.
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, such as dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper products and soap supplies.
  • Completes routine and scheduled general maintenance activities, including but not limited to, light bulb replacement, ceiling tile replacement, electrical, plumbing, drywall, and painting.
  • Maintains cleanliness and appearance of library grounds by routinely inspecting perimeters and identifying any maintenance issues.
  • Sets up and arranges tables, chairs, and other equipment for library programs in accordance with pre-established requests.
  • Maintains collaborative working relations with staff, customers, and outside organizations to provide a safe and welcoming library environment.
  • Drives to all library locations to transport equipment or assistance with maintenance needs.
  • Responds to off-duty emergency calls regarding building-related emergencies when needed.

Qualifications: 

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Relevant experience in custodial work, building maintenance, or construction.
  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • General skills with carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and building mechanics.
  • Basic computer knowledge to write reports and respond to emails.
  • Good people skills to be able to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills a plus.

37.5 hours per week (Full-Time) Schedule includes working Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. May be required to occasionally fill in other hours during the week as necessary.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish language skills a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch.

In this role, you will be instrumental in assisting adults with accessing library resources and programs while fostering a warm and inclusive environment for all customers. You’ll have the opportunity to make an impact by delivering programs, offering tech support, and ensuring smooth operations in the absence of the manager.

In this role you will:

  • Plan and present adult programs at both the Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch.
  • Host and provide program support including communication with presenters.
  • Facilitate passive programming activities for various adult audiences.
  • Provide readers’ advisory and reference assistance to children, teens, and adults.
  • Perform circulation routines, including library card registration, material handling, and shelving.
  • Assist customers with computer applications, printing, self-check, DVD dispenser, laptop dispenser, eReaders, and other mobile devices.
  • Step into the role of Person in Charge (PIC) when the manager is away, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience working with adults in group settings.
  • Previous library and customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications and mobile devices.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish language skills a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch.
